Stain Removal Tips

First Aid Stain Treatment for your carpets

Follow the advice below to avoid causing unnecessary damage to your carpets and furniture.

The Golden Rule

Never ever rub the stain whatever it may be.If you do this you will cause pile burst which results in frizzing. This can not be rectified.

When carpets are manufactured each fibre has a heat set memory built into it.When you rub you cause friction which wipes the memory so that the fibre does not return to original twist position hence the frizzing.

You should dab at spills or stains when attempting removal applying downward pressure as opposed to across the pile.

———————————————————————————————–

There are Four Basic Solutions for home carpet spot and stain removal;

Dry cleaning solution – surgical spirit
A detergent solution such as ‘Stergene’ mixed 1 teaspoon to half a litre of warm water
A detergent and vinegar solution mixed 1 tablespoon of white vinegar to the detergent solution above
An ammonia solution 1 x teaspoonful of branded ammonia to one cup of warm water.

All the above are available from super markets of hardware stores.CAUTION never mix under the sink cleaning solutions together you could cause fumes that could prove fatal.

Procedure for treatment for stains

Wine, beer, coffee, tea other liquid foods and urine.

Blot the spill soaking up surplus using a neutral coloured towel or kitchen tissue on the roll (for body fluids make sure you wear protective gloves and clothing) .Work from the outer edge in wards using detergent-vinegar (no.3) solution blot the spill a little at a time changing cloths frequently.

When complete carry out a rinse of the area using an application either by spray bottle or sponge of 4 parts water to 1 part white vinegar.Spray over affected area to dampen.Lay white kitchen roll (still on the roll) on top and apply a weight such as a heavy book. This will absorb excess moisture.Leave to soak in overnight or all day if necessary and if required repeat the process.

2. Chocolate,sweets,blood,glue,ink,milk, vomit

Scrape up excess using a filling knife or some other blunt tool.Using Detergent Solution (No.2) and working in from the outside edge clean the stain and then blot dry.Follow up with ammonia solution (No4) and again blot dry.

Carry out rinse procedure as above.

3. Solids, fats, tar, chewing gum, oil, shoe polish

Scrape up excess with blunt tool or knife, using dry clean solution (No.1) followed by detergent-vinegar solution (No3) work on stain from the outside edge in and blot dry.

Carry out rinse procedure as above.

4. For unknown stains

Scrap or blot up excess spillage, start with dry clean solution (No1) followed by warm water and blot dry.If further treatment is needed use detergent vinegar solution (No3) and blot dry.

Carry out rinse procedure as above.

Important thing to remember is to act quickly, take your time to carry out most effective procedure as listed and follow instructions carefully and do not over wet the affected area as this could cause further damage.

If after all your best efforts the mark remains, now is the time to call a professional carpet cleaner .

Cigarette Burns

Cigarette burns can usually be dealt with quite successfully by re tufting the affected area. This takes some skill and should not be attempted by untrained persons.

Red wine,coffee,tea spills

The most common of spills as above can cause panic in the home and often in that panic the wrong course of action is taken. This can result in the opposite of what you are trying to achieve and can in fact set the stain.

Never use washing up liquid it will set the stain and leave tacky soil attracting residue which will cause the carpet to blacken very quickly.

Your carpet cleaner will be pleased that you have assisted him by carrying out correct procedure and this will mean he will be able to remove the stain much faster resulting in lower charges for yourself. (Spot Clean approx £40.00 -  £50.00).

Carpet Cleaning : Anti-Stain Treatment For Carpets!

Anti-Stain Treatment For Carpets Is The Only Way To Keep Your Carpets Looking “Like New” Carpet Cleaning Has For Year Not Given The Level Of Service That’s Required To Get Stain FREE Carpets.

First please let me explain about stain protection. Its a product that is sprayed onto the carpet when its made or after carpet cleaning to protect the fiber from stains.

Stain Protection has not had good press. there are a few reasons for this.

1. Poor cleaning that strips out the protection.
2. Over selling its benefits.
3. People thinking that leaving a spillage to clear up at a later date will be OK.
4. Carpet cleaners not providing top ups after cleaning.
5. Long periods between carpet cleaning.

So lets take each problem one by one.

Poor cleaning that strips out the protection.
Carpet cleaning is a business that people that want to work for themselves think will be easy. well it looks that way from the outside. cleaning has had this problem for many years. just like you would not trust just anyone to clean hygiene area in food or where people are ill you should not trust just anyone to clean your carpet.

Cleaning is a science and at the very basic level cleaners should know what they are doing as damage can come in many ways from health to lose or damage to property.

Using the wrong methods and products will remove any stain protection from your carpet when carpet cleaning.

Over selling its benefits.
Lets clear this one up once and for all. stain protection works. it gives you the time to clean any spillage up when its fresh. leave this spillage and even stain protection can not withstand some spillages when drying out.

People thinking that leaving a spillage to clear up at a later date will be OK.
You need to know the difference between spills, spots and stains. A spill is a fresh spot or stain. a spot is a dry spill that sits on the surface of the carpet attracting dirt. that’s why spots are black. a stain is a dry spill that removes the protection and get into the fiber of the carpet. just like you can strip paint carpet protection can be striped by some spills. not when wet but as they dry. This is why its important to deal with spills as they happen.

Carpet cleaners not providing top ups after cleaning within the price of the clean and trying to up-sell people.

Stain protection will last for about two to three cleans provide the carpet cleaning is don’t with the right methods and products. and also that the periods between carpet cleanings are not long. The reason for this is that grit will wear the stain protection off the traffic lanes.

Now its my opinion that stain protection should be part of any carpet cleaning in areas that need this product. but many carpet cleaners will not do this and want to charge extra by up-selling this service. their reasons is that the product does not cost very much and it also does not take long to apply. its a quick and easy way to make some extra cash.

I think that the customer should say if they don’t want this service and this way money can be saved. if that’s what the customer wants. some people when cleaning carpets want a quick cheap clean. say when moving home.

Long periods between carpet cleaning.

As I have said grit can wear the protection off. so its important to have your carpets cleaned as often as you can. this will depend on what use they get and where about they are in your home.

What’s the difference between a spot and stains?

What’s the difference between a spot and stains? Spots add substance to the fiber and a stain adds color or removes color from the fiber and is permanent. Deal with a spill when its fresh and you stand a 95% chance of it not be a problem.

Have your carpet and sofas protected will coat the fiber with a product and seal it so that the spills can not damage the fiber. Lots of carpet cleaner provide this service free now its worth searching around to find one that does as some still charge extra for it.

When you deal with a spill you need to absorb as much as you can. Blot don’t rub, hold a clean towel or bath towel depending on how big the spill is, you want cloths that can absorb as much liquid as possible. Use white if possible At this time don’t use any products, you need work from the outside in so not to spread the spill. If the spill has solids in it then scrap up as much as possible. Don’t be heavy handed.

Being heavy handed will crush the pile and make the spill and area more apparent. Before using any product on the spill test it in an inconspicuous area first to make sure damage or discoloration will not happen.

If you want to dry the spill only use cool air from a hand hair drier. As heat can set stains. Or you can put a towel on the area and pill some books or heavy objects on it this will suck out any remain liquid.

Anti-Stain Treatment Protection

For years now carpet cleaners have charged extra for stain protection. It’s a great way for them to make some extra money and up sell you. Well it’s as cheap as chips to provide and takes minutes to apply.

All the above would be fine if it worked 100% and it does in some cases but not all. Why? Lots of reasons. From wear to being applied wrongly or not at all in some scams.

When you invest in a wool carpet you would like it to last as long as possible, so you can get value for money. Most wool carpets will come with some brand of stain protection. The reason is that wool stains easily. So why use it in carpets? Because it warms and nice to the feel. And with a good stain protector applied it will last.

Like most things the protection will wear in heavy traffic areas and lanes so it will need topping up when you get your carpets cleaned. As I said it take minutes to apply and the cost is very low to the professional carpet cleaner.

With the average price of carpet cleaning going up, and you cant compare those really cheap deals as they are not trading as they should or I can tell you their price would be where everyone else’s are. You should expect stain protection as standard service.

If you don’t get this in with your clean then ask why? When they say its expensive then you know they are not being truthful with you. Its not.

You as customers have to push for this products to be free within standard service as carpet cleaners don’t see the damage its doing not offer it this way.

In the past few years more and more people are using hard floor coverings. Why because they are sick of stains on their expensive wool carpets. Things must change.

One other very, very important aspect is that lots of hard floor covering strip the environment of resources. I know that the stain product is not perfect in this area but I’ll bet it does less damage than say a wood floor does to the environment.
